2004 Rules

Roster and Roster Deadlines

Games will begin every Thursday evening at 7 p.m. EST.* Rosters must be posted weekly on this site's posting board or e-mailed to me before then. Starting rosters will consist of 1 quarterback, 1 runningback, 1 wide receiver, 1 flex position, and 1 defensive team. You can use a runningback or a wide receiver at your flex position. You may use a tight end at the wide receiver or flex position. You must post or e-mail me player position, player first name, player last name, and player college or university (not necessarily in that order) for each offensive player on your starting roster including the position your Flex player plays. Post defense as a position and the name of the college or university you would like in your starting roster.

* The season begins at 7 p.m. EST Thursday September 2, 2004. For Week 1 only, rosters are due on a Tuesday by 7 p.m. EST - August 31, 2004.

Penalties

The yellow flags will only be thrown if you don't meet all of the requirements mentioned above in Roster and Roster Deadlines. Just as in the real game penalties will be paid in yards lost. Roster players will be penalized yardage in their fields of strength - quarterbacks in passing yards, runningbacks in rushing yards and wide receivers in receiving yards. Infractions and their penalties are as follows:

Not getting your roster in before the deadline: Fifteen yard deduction from each of your four offensive players in their fields of strength. This on top of resorting to your previous week's roster.**

Fifteen yards will be deducted from the field of strength of any roster player for whom each of the four categories are not posted completely. Position (including the position your Flex player plays), first name, last name, and name of university or college. Fifteens yards per category so there could be a maximum of sixty yards deducted per player. A player's initials will not be considered complete unless that is their popular form such as B.J. Askew, J.P. Losman, T.A. McLendon, etc. College acronyms such as UofM, UM, or MSU will not be considered "complete" unless that is how they appear on the 'home page' or your 'Conference pages'. Post school names as they appear on the 'home page' or your 'Conference pages'. Those will be the reference guides/pages we can all use when/if questions arise.

Posting or e-mailing me a roster containing a player or players on a bye week: Sixty yards deduction per player. Applied to Season Penalty Yards only. If a player on a bye week is inserted by myself due to a deadline infraction the 60 yard penalty still applies along with the 60 yard penalty for the roster infraction itself.

Each week a roster is late or not posted at all, an asterisk (*) will appear next to your Conference name on the Box Score pages and on the Season Penalty Yards Page. Four consecutive weeks with an asterisk next to your Conference name will result in a 60 Yard penalty. Five consecutive weeks will equal another 60 yard penalty etc.

Season Penalty Yards: Owners who build up less than 350 yards in penalties throughout the season will still have jobs as owners here next season - automatic invite. Owners who build up 350 yards or more throughout the season will not receive an automatic invite. Owners will receive a lifetime ban from the league upon reaching 500 yards in penalties in a season.

**Conferences who do not get their rosters submitted before the deadline, or do not submit at all will be penalized 15 yards per offensive player and will have to play with their previous week's roster, as mentioned above. In this scenario if any penalties were given for categories not being submitted correctly for that previous week's roster, those same penalties will be applied once again. Example scenario: The owner of the Sun Belt submits his/her roster for Week 1 and is penalized 15 yards because for the name of a runningback he/she submits R. Jones. The first name wasn't complete. Everything else on the Sun Belt's Week 1 roster was submitted complete. If the owner of the Sun Belt fails to make the roster deadline for Week 2 then the Week 1 roster, identical, will be inserted. The Sun Belt's offensive players will all have 15 yards deducted from their fields of strength for the deadline infraction and since an identical version of the Week 1 roster will be inserted R. Jones will be penalized 15 more yards. In this scenario the Sun Belt would be penalized as follows in Week 2: The quarterback would have 15 yards deducted from passing yards (deadline infraction -15); the runningback would have 30 yards deducted in rushing yards (category not complete -15, deadline infraction -15); the wide receiver would have 15 yards deducted from receiving yards (-15 deadline infraction); the flex position would have 15 yards deducted in either rushing or receiving yards depending on who the owner has inserted (-15 deadline infraction).

Penalty yards will be deducted from players before scoring is computed. In other words penalty yards can determine the outcome of a game.

If there is any time during the season that you know of that will pose a problem for you getting your roster in before a deadline e-mail me your roster in advance to avoid infractions. I will be in Florida the week of October 16, 2004 so I will be late that week in posting lineups and scores. No information will be lost though and I will update everything upon returning.

The main reason for instituting penalties is because last season I spent way more time searching the Internet trying to figure out exactly who people wanted on their rosters due to the four categories not being complete than I needed to. Like you I am a huge college football fan and love to watch as well. The faster I insert the starters on Thursday evening the sooner I can turn on ESPN and watch the game. The two main reasons for completion is so there is no miscommunication and it makes copying and pasting much easier for me.

Another reason for instituting penalties is to filter out anyone who is not really interested. Let's face it, if you rack up 350 Season Penalty Yards, you're pretty much just wasting my time and your fellow league members time. If you rack up 500 Season Penalty Yards you're telling me you are about as motivated about this league as a crackhead is about eating...And see ya later!

Scoring

Offensive Scoring

Offensive roster players will score points for their conference in relation to how they perform each week. See table at bottom.

Touchdowns
Six points will be earned for each passing touchdown, rushing touchdown, and receiving touchdown. Six points will be earned by any roster player who returns a kickoff, punt, interception, or fumble for a touchdown.

Two Point Conversions
Two points will be earned for passing, rushing, or receiving for a two point conversion.

Yards Gained
Points will be earned from yards gained in passing, rushing, and receiving. Points will be earned in increments of 100 yards in passing and 50 yards in both rushing and receiving in a Double Up to Eight system.

A roster player will receive 1 point for his first 100 yards passing, 2 more points for his second 100 yards passing, 4 more points for his third 100 yards in passing, and 8 more points for every other hundred yards passed for. Examples: A player who passes for 219 yards in a game will earn 3 points for passing yardage. One point for the first 100 yards plus two more points for the second 100 yards. A player that passes for 598 yards in a game will earn 23 points for yardage.

A roster player will receive 1 point for his first 50 yards rushing or receiving, 2 more points for his second 50 yards rushing or receving, 4 more points for his third 50 yards in rushing or receiving, and 8 more points for every other fifty yards rushed or received for. Example: A runningback who rushes for 157 yards will receive 7 points for rushing yardage. One point for the first 50 yards plus 2 points for the second 50 yards plus 4 points for the third 50 yards.

Points Lost

Points will be deducted for fumbles lost and interceptions thrown. Players will be deducted 2 points per fumble lost. Players will be deducted 2 points per intercetion thrown and 6 points if the interception is returned for a touchdown.

Players may end up with negative points for a week but Conferences as a whole will not. In other words the only place a negative number will not be inserted is for a Conference's final score.

Defense and Defensive Scoring

Each week owners must include the defense of a college or university to his/her roster. Example: The owner could post Defense: Michigan. Defenses will have 21 defensive points to begin each game. Turnovers, sacks, and statistics like those will not count for anything here. The only thing that will count is the final score of the college or university your defense is playing against. Example: Again, let's use Michigan. The owner of the Big 10 starts Michigan's defense. That week Michigan is playing Purdue. For every point Purdue scores in that game a point is deducted from the 21 defensive points the Big 10 started with. If Purdue ends the game with 17 points then 17 points are deducted from the Big 10's original 21 leaving them with 4 defensive points. Your teams defensive points will not be added to your score. They will be substracted from your opponents final score. Of course your opponent will have a defense of his/her own so the same will happen to you. This will be indicated in red in the boxscore. Roster defenses who give up 21 or more points in a game will subtract 0 from their opponent's final score. There will be no such thing as a negative when it comes to defense.

Final Score Formula

Penalty yards + yards gained + touchdowns + turnovers = offensive player's weekly final score. Your Conference weekly final score, the most important one, will equal the sum of your opponent's defensive points subtracted from the total points earned by your quarterback, runningback, wide receiver, and flex position combined.

Tie Breakers

In this league a game that ends in a tie will count as a tie in the standings. If two teams playing against each other both end up with less than 0 points the game will end in a tie 0-0. However, negative points will be counted for player statistics.
